About the house
It's now December in the year 2003 and the house is 110 years old. Its a Victorian built in the Queen Ann style. Built in 1893, it was one of the first houses to be built on the block. It's located within the Hensley Historic District and proudly sits amongst five other grand Victorian homes anchoring the corner of one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city.
We were told that our house is a variation on John Steinbeck's boyhood home located in Salinas. With the exception of the turret and a few finishing details, they look very much alike! (though ours still needs work on the porch & stairs)
While the Steinbeck Mansion has fifteen rooms, ours has Eleven rooms, Drawing Room (Formal Parlor), Living room, Formal Dining room, Morning room, Conservatory, Library, Kitchen & Scullery (not counting the two-story five room Carriage House).
The ground level is completely finished off and was used as an alternative Healing Center. It has a Therapy / Massage room, Office/Library, Large Classroom and two other rooms as well as a large bathroom.

The history of the house
From what we've uncovered so far, the house has hosted a colorful cast of characters... let's just say that a Beer Baron called it home in the 1890's, and some hemp loving hippies spent the 60's in it, but we still don't know who the house was originally built for. The census records show that many prominent people (and some crazy ones including a Magnetic Healer and his Clairvoyant wife) lived in our block and on our street
We are also trying to find out who the architect of both our home and the Steinbeck house was. Please let us know if you have any information.
We are looking for old photos of the house and surrounding areas, so if anyone has a source they can suggest, we would be grateful. You can sign our Guest Book and add your comments there.
Please check back for the latest updates as we will be adding more pictures, information, and tidbits as our journey unfolds.
"How do we know it's us without our past?"
